Unseen Refuge

Artist’s statement about the piece:
“I had a deep and very clear dream.
I saw a large tree, but at the base of the tree were terrifying, rabid dogs, foaming at the mouth and clawing at the trunk.  On the bottom, largest branch sat a man just out of reach, safe but petrified.  As I moved closer to the scene I began to see that the entire tree was made up of angels, camouflaged, sparkling, and supporting and protecting the man.  I wondered why instead of focusing on the dogs, he didn’t just turn around to see what was holding him.  Even though he was perfectly safe, his entire focus was on the terror just below his feet.
In my dream I remember thinking, ‘I need to paint this’.  However, I couldn’t decide if I should paint it looking straight on or if a side angle might be better, so I walked around the scene to look at it from the side and then I woke up.  I knew immediately I needed to paint what I had seen so clearly while sleeping.”  -Liz Hess
