Last year I was honored to be asked to provide the cover art for an autobiography by local author, Sally Jo Landis who has written an exciting memoir of her life; a simple, Lancaster County Mennonite girl who grew up to live a not-so-simple life because she allowed God to write her story.
From her family farm to corporate NYC where she worked for a law firm in the Twin Towers, to adventures around the world, she bravely soldiered through it all as a single woman. Encountering many thrilling but also frightening situations, she saw the hand of God in every circumstance,
It was only when she returned to Lancaster (approaching her retirement years) to take care of her elderly mother, that a surprising romance blossomed.
Her book has just launched and is now available here.

I have experienced such sweet and kind visits from you these last couple of weeks as I was in the midst of closing down a beloved brick and mortar business.

How can I leave customers/clients and friends who have been so good to me? How can I leave Gallery Row and my wonderful neighboring galleries who have been so good to me? How can I leave a supportive city which has been so good to me?

It’s not easy saying farewell to 19 years of such a positive chapter of my life, but I am feeling called, driven, and excited about this next season, and I would love to take you with me. I will keep you updated here in this blog and on the Liz Hess Gallery Facebook page.

At the end of February, 2025, Liz will be closing her gallery doors.
“I have taken a year to process this decision, but made my final plan about a month ago. I have had my gallery for 19 years and have loved every minute, but now some new opportunities have come my way, including some art projects abroad. After carefully considering all my options, I came to the conclusion that I couldn’t do both; run a local gallery and take on these upcoming art opportunities. Could I hire someone to manage my gallery full time while I involve myself in these new projects? Of course! But since I also create the products I sell in my gallery, I don’t see how I could make it all work. Something would suffer and I’m afraid it would be my gallery walls.”

So after 19 years of loving being downtown, Liz has decided to offer other artists the opportunity to have her space. A couple will be moving in and creating their own art gallery in her former location on Gallery Row, with plans to open on First Friday, March 7.

On a personal note, as an artist Liz is not going anywhere. She will still have her website and still be working full time as an artist, but just in a different capacity involving travel and other art projects.

You will also notice a very different direction Liz will be going in her art subject matter. She will be discontinuing her signature red umbrella line which she launched 23 years ago in 2002.
“I have loved creating it, but what I will be doing next I love even more!”
You may continue to follow Liz here on the site and on her gallery Facebook page where she’ll be posting the latest updates and keeping you informed.

Those of you who have collected Liz’s art over the years will be encouraged to know that any originals of hers that you own will now greatly increase in value since no new ones will be added to the collection. And for those of you who have been eyeing any in her gallery, now is your chance. She has just a few originals left. You can find them here on the website under Available Originals: https://www.lizhess.com/shop-art/?_art_categories=originals

Years ago before there was any Gallery Row, and when only 2 galleries
existed in the city, hundreds of artists from Lancaster county and city would
converge upon the streets downtown for the large, annual art show.
Taking place only one Sat. per year, it wound up and down most of the
streets in center city.
In my naivete as a newly-graduated high school senior, I had the nerve to
enter this show/contest. Hilariously, I entered it with only two paintings on
two folding chairs because I didn’t own any easels. There I stood along
King St., side-by-side many talented artists and some well-known ones who
had professional booths with many paintings. I’m surprised they even let me in.
Imagine my shock (as well as everyone else’s) when the coveted, blue,
first place ribbon was awarded to one of those two, humble paintings of mine.
Since then, the royal blue has faded into a bright, pinkish lavender, but that
ribbon still hangs over my painting area in my home studio as a reminder that
all it takes is a dream, a drive, and apparently not enough wits to realize you
will never make it.

(Above watercolor painting, “Old Staffordshire” was painted in 1984 when Liz was 18 years old and took the blue ribbon.)

Dear Ms. Hess,

We are the Reading Group from Mrs. Miller’s class here at Cub Run Elementary School in Virginia. We went to your website and looked at all your paintings. We thought they
were extremely cool! We liked the story about the red umbrella in your paintings. We admired them so much that we decided to make our own.

Mrs. Miller took pictures of our work and they are attached. We hope you enjoy them.

We are also wondering if you are taking another trip soon to get more ideas for paintings?

Sincerely,
Mrs. Miller’s reading group

“Red Umbrella Series To Get Red-Carpet Treatment

by Carla Di Fonzo
October 11, 2008
Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster Newspapers

When Liz Hess found out her work would be celebrated this weekend in honor of National Arts &
Humanities month, she said her reaction could best be described as ‘dumbfounded’. ‘I thought they
were going to feature a group of us,’ the local artist said. ‘So when they told me I was the feature artist
for the entire celebration, I couldn’t help but feel honored.’

The celebration will be hosted by the Bon-Ton at Park City Center to coincide with the store’s grand
reopening. The co-host is none other than CHANEL Beaute. Hess’ glamorous ‘Red Umbrella’ series
will be on display today throughout the store.

Most of the action will take place around the Bon-Ton’s make-up department, where regional Chanel
make-up artists will give complimentary consultations from noon to 5 PM. Musical guests, the
Trelumina Trio will perform during the gala-style event.

Anyone who has seen Hess’ ‘Red Umbrella’ paintings can see an easy connection to Chanel, with
their sleek attitude and advanced sense of couture. One of the paintings features a well-dressed
woman walking a dog in the rain, her trusty red umbrella protecting her posh clothes.

Hess is owner of Liz Hess Gallery (formerly Gallery 2) at 140 N. Prince St. in Lancaster. She is also
a world traveler having begun her adventures in utero. As the daughter of missionaries, Hess was born
in Honduras in 1965 and later grew up in Lancaster. From the age of 23-31, Hess served on a mission
team that was stationed 10 miles above the arctic circle in Sweden’s Lapland. There she learned to
speak, read and write Swedish fluently. ‘I still love to travel,’ she said; ‘it fuels my art.’

Today’s reception celebrating National Arts & Humanities Month and Bon-Ton’s grand reopening will
begin at 11:15 am at the Bon-Ton Department Store, 600 Park City Center.”

(After the fact…The event proved to be a great success for Liz and the Bon-Ton. The Chanel counter
at the store reported that sales at their counter that day were up 200%. The Bon-Ton had also
hired professional models who were stationed around the event area, posing with red umbrellas
together with Liz’s art. Liz was also honored by Senator Mike Brubaker who attended the celebration
and presented a document and plaque to her from Governor Ed Rendell honoring Pennsylvania artists.)

Kirsten Johnsen didn’t realize that her date with beau, Tim Martin (both of Lancaster) would result in their engagement during a First Friday evening at Liz Hess Gallery. Unbeknownst to her, Tim had arranged ahead of time with Liz that the diamond ring he had purchased would be hidden within the center of a lily. The lily was then carefully arranged within the center of the large bouquet on the table in the middle of the Gallery.

On a busy First Friday with a crowd of people filing in and out of the gallery all evening, Tim and Kirsten also happened to be part of that crowd making it’s rounds to all the galleries on Gallery Row. When Kirsten saw the beautiful bouquet inside the Gallery, Tim asked Liz in front of her if he could have one of the lilies for Kirsten. Liz pulled out the one with the diamond hidden deep within the center of the lily, which Tim then handed to Kirsten as he got down on one knee to propose. When the crowd saw what was taking place, they parted and formed a circle around the couple, and then applauded and cheered when Kirsten accepted Tim’s proposal.

The couple has now been happily married since the summer of 2007.
